This morning, this country lost its shit. And the culprit?

Benevolent Overlord Jobs and the iPhone 4
People stood in line, in the cold, to make sure they were the first to fork over their money for this consumer electronic that frankly, isn’t that impressive. People were franticly running around cities to find the only outlet with stock. People were cancelling contracts and changing networks because their network had sold out of the iPhone 4. People were ultimately paying potentially thousands of dollars to get their grubby little (and probably over worked from masturbating) hands on an iPhone 4 the day it was released (as if no more stock will come and their life will be over if they can not have one).
Most of these people had perfectly good old model iPhones. Most of those people were only half way through their contracts and needed to cancel and pay out to upgrade. Or they will now just pay two phone bills.
These people will likely vote.
I think Futurama pretty much nailed it.
But anyway, in case you were wondering if you should buy an iPhone 4 on the day of its release or if you were considering buying one soon, I made a flowchart that should make your decision easier.
You’re welcome.

That flow chart is absolutely brilliant.
I’ve never understood the urge to queue up all night just to be the first to get a product like this. In fact I’m quite disturbed by the childish herd mentality of people.

My contacts in the retail electronics industry saw things today that they can not un-see.
People really can be very, very stupid.

And after using an iPhone 4, not that anyone really cares, but I thought it was pretty much exactly the same as the other iPhones. A little nicer, yes. But if you have a perfectly good 3GS, there is no reason to pay out your contract and get an iPhone 4 at all.

Major bad press, ill-thought-out, faulty implementation yet still the sheep buy it.
Maybe a good sign for the ALP in the upcoming election.
Yesterday’s ‘Where were you when Princess Dianna died?’ is today’s ‘Where were you when iConsume 4 came out?’

That flowchart puts everything I’ve ever blogged to shame.

Other things to consider, jokingly or not:
- Do you have a shitload of money that you’re willing to spend? i.e. Can you afford getting another phone/enter another contract?
- Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg Did you cringe or totally sympathise to the retard asking for an iPhone 4?
- Do you realise that a phone’s a phone and buying one will not significantly improve your life in any way?
As a former iPhone user, jumping to a HTC Desire (Android) was easy and I’m enjoying learning a new system. You will have to pry my iPad out from my dead hands though you bastards.

I lined up with a mate for the midnight launch of the PS3, had a great time afterwards. Met him again at 500am for the first iPhone launch in Melbourne, good fun.
I say people can do what they like when it comes to spending their money buying new gear.

It’s just a frigging phone. If you want one, buy one. If you don’t, then don’t.
Brand hatred is as warped as brand love. You’ve bought into the whole emotional sell as much as the blind followers – just in reverse.
If you buy an android, you’re still consuming. And supporting google is hardly rooting for the little guy.
One product is no more ‘virtuous’ than another, as far as I can see.

I don’t think I am blindly following with my choice of Android. I think it is a better platform that offers me more choice and flexibility in the way I do things.
I am not saying iPhones are bad, I think they are great phones that suit a great number of people.
What I was commenting on is the rush of people to upgrade from the iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4 with little thought as to why they were doing it. It cost people a lot of money to pay out contracts just to upgrade from a perfectly good iPhone to a somewhat better iPhone.
I was not attacking the iPhone for being a bad phone, I do not believe my choice in phone makes me any more ‘virtuous’ than an iPhone user.
What I was attacking is the ill-informed idiots who need to have iPhone 4s. Must. They don’t even know why.
Most people didn’t even touch or use one before buying, they just bought it because it was the new iPhone.
